Dicom Spigraph Group delivers new capture solution to Unisys capable of processing over 60M payment items a year

New system improves the performance of the Unisys Payment Services and Solutions (UPSS) “paper to digital” process for clearing cheques, giro payments and other paper payment documents across BeNeLux.

Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, France, 28/10/2014:Dicom Spigraph Group (www.spigraph.com), the leading provider of intelligent scanning, capture and document process solutions in EMEA, today announced that a new capture solution recently provided by Dicom Spigraph Group to Unisys' UPSS division is now fully operational and capable of processing over 60M paper-based payment transaction items per year. UPSS is the leading bank-independent paper-based payment processing service provider in BeNeLux and is part of Unisys' Global Managed Service BPO organisation.

At the heart of the new Dicom Spigraph Group system are three ibml ImageTrac Series 5 scanners that can accommodate the wide variety of paper formats that UPSS has to handle on a daily basis, ranging from credit card slips through to A4 SEPA mandate documents. The decision to upgrade the existing capture system, based on 20 year old scanner technology, was taken in 2013. The new system is now in full production. The high-volume image flow from the scanners is managed by customised server-side software and passed to UPSS's existing downstream payment processing and image archiving system.

“The new capture capability represents a significant improvement over the old system” said Rob Fopma, Managing Director, UPSS b.v. “Because of the mechanical design of the ImageTrac scanners, we have far less paper jams and any that do occur are much quicker to clear. In addition, better compression algorithms reduce the size of the item images and, when you are processing over 250,000 items a day, this has significant impact on downstream processing and storage requirements. Finally, and most importantly, our operations staff are very happy with the ease of operation and reduced noise associated with the new installation”

Given the spare processing capacity that the new system provides, UPSS are now looking at the potential of offering additional outsourced services to their customers, including Mailroom automation, Accounts Payable and other document-related services.

“It was great working with UPSS and having the opportunity to build and install a time-critical processing system that could deal with such high volumes” said Joachim Froning, Senior Vice President Distribution for Dicom Spigraph Group. “And we continue to prove our industry-leading expertise and ability in high performance capture by making sure – also with our services – the UPSS installation keeps running at full production speeds.”

About UPSS

Unisys Global Managed Services (GMS) has focused its Continental European BPO payment activities into the 100% Unisys subsidiary UPSS. UPSS was founded in 2004 when Unisys acquired the paper-based payments processing part of the Interpay (now Equens) organization, which had been the national clearing house for The Netherlands since 1968. Over the intervening years, UPSS has gained market share in both The Netherlands and Belgium, and is now the largest bank-independent paper based payment processor in both countries.
